There are two kinds of sensors, which are similar in a lot of ways (their tendency to live in the moment) but also quite different. It’s easier to separate Sensors than Intuitives, since their approach is totally different.
External Sensing: is focused on the moment. It notices everything. It’s all about taking immediate action for immediate results. It lives for extremes – Se loves fast cars, loud music, and doing things that come with a thrill (race car driving, dangerous stunts, roller coasters, life and death decisions). Se accumulates experiences; it’s all about doing as much as possible. Se rarely looks to the past, since they’re so focused in the present. Se is focused on external things, and dealing with facts in the real world. Se is untraditional and action-driven. Se are doers. They leap right into things.
Thor is a Se-user. Fearless. Loves a fight. Is a big risk-taker. Rushes into things. Thinks about the here and now, not the later. When confronted with an enemy, Thor’s first instinct is to clobber it – and if he gets to nearly die in the process, all the better. He’s excited by taking action.
Internal Sensing: lives in the present and the past simultaneously, using former personal information and experiences to reinforce their actions in the present. A Si-user notices details in the present, but compare and contrast them to the past, or save them for comparison to future experiences. Si is focused on internal things, and deals with the world through personal associations. Si are traditional. Si are slower to take action.
Captain America is a Si-user. Compares present situation to past experiences. Has a strong connection to his past and is nostalgic. More careful in his approach. Traditional in his beliefs.
Same outcome, different approach
Se-users take immediate action, while Si-users process the information fully before acting on it. Se-users enjoy being forced to make rapid decisions; Si-users are more comfortable having time to think through something. Both are aware of the world around them, but one is more focused on the here and now, while one is focused on the past as well as the present.
A Se-user is going to go on a wild ride at a theme part, enjoy the experience, and walk away from it without a second thought; a Si-user will go on that same ride and re-experience the fun they had the last time around, along with the memories of that former experience. Se-users experience life, Si-users make memories.
